Uttarakhand

देवभूमि उत्तराखण्ड

Ganga Aarti at Haridwar, deodar hill towns, the four shrines of the Char Dham and the snow peaks of Kumaon. Twelve trips with the full day-wise plan, priced per head, with one coordinator on the phone from pick-up to drop.

The Uttarakhand Himalaya, west to east

Two hill regions, one state

Uttarakhand splits into Garhwal in the west and Kumaon in the east. Where you arrive decides which one you see first.

Garhwal

West, along the Ganga and its source rivers

Haridwar and Rishikesh where the Ganga leaves the hills, Mussoorie and Lansdowne above them, and deeper in, the four shrines of the Char Dham, the meadows of Chopta and Auli, and the Valley of Flowers.

Arrive at Haridwar, Rishikesh or Dehradun

Kumaon

East, lakes, orchards and long views

Nainital and its lakes, Neem Karoli Baba's ashram at Kainchi Dham, the ridges of Mukteshwar and Kausani, Munsiyari facing the Panchachuli peaks, and Corbett's sal forests in the foothills.

Arrive at Kathgodam or Pantnagar

Prices are per head on twin sharing in standard hotels, indicative for peak season, for the group size shown. Your final price depends on dates, group size and hotel category, and we send an itemised quote the same day.

When to go

Uttarakhand works most of the year, just not every part of it at once. The high shrines close for winter, the monsoon closes the high roads, and the Valley of Flowers only blooms in the rain.

Questions people ask before booking

Is the price per person?

Yes. Prices are per head on twin sharing in standard hotels, for the group size shown on each package. Smaller groups, premium hotels, or dates around Diwali, Dussehra and the summer holidays change the figure. We send an itemised quote before you pay anything.

Do we need to register for the Char Dham Yatra?

Yes. The Uttarakhand government requires every pilgrim to register before the yatra. We register the whole group for you; we only need a photo ID for each traveller.

How do we book the Kedarnath helicopter?

Kedarnath helicopter tickets are sold only on the official IRCTC HeliYatra website, in the traveller's own name. Seats open in batches and go quickly, so we tell you when the booking window opens and help you through it. Never pay anyone who offers "confirmed" helicopter tickets outside that website.

How hard are the treks?

Tungnath is 3.5 km on a paved path and most healthy adults manage it in two to three hours. Kedarnath is 16 km each way and Hemkund Sahib is a steep 6 km climb; ponies, palkis and porters are available on all of them. Tell us about knees, heart or blood pressure when you enquire and we will plan around it.

When should we avoid Uttarakhand?

July and August bring heavy rain and landslides on the high roads, so we do not recommend the Char Dham, Chopta or Auli then. The Valley of Flowers is the exception: it is at its best in the monsoon.

Can you change a package or start it from Kolkata?

Every package here is a starting point. We can add or drop nights, upgrade hotels, swap a car for a Tempo Traveller for bigger groups, and book your trains or flights from Kolkata or Delhi.

Send us your dates. We will send back a plan.

Tell us how many people, how many nights and roughly what you want to spend. You get a day-wise plan and an itemised price the same day.
